Celebrating the 10th school trip to Malawi
This year, we celebrated taking our tenth school trip to Malawi. We have now taken 320 pupils, 22 members of staff and another 24 friends of Watson's Malawi Partnership to see this beautiful country and experience first-hand, the warm heart of Africa.
The idea was first conceived when George Watson's College matron, Sally Rae, reconnoitred the country with her daughter, back in 2011. The school was so impressed with their feedback that it was agreed that the first trip should take place 12 months later with 24 lucky pupils.
At first the Malawi trip took place every two years, with just 24 pupils, but the experience proved so popular that the trip became an annual fixture in 2015 and was extended to include 44 students in 2019.
It was with great disappointment that we had to cancel the trip for two years in a row in 2020 and 2021 but we have been delighted to resume every year since, culminating in the tenth trip this year.
It isn't just the students who have been able to participate in this unforgettable adventure. 22 members of staff have accompanied the school trip over the years and we have run separate excursions for friends of Malawi, typically over the Easter holidays - 21 so far.
