The big tree count

It's time for the Zomba TREEZ community to count all the trees growing on the 30 hectare stretch of the South Western plain. And this year, the team has managed to protect a staggering 90,000 trees along with a further 20,000 planted in the local community.
Tom and Petal set up this small conservation organisation eight years, sponsoring local football and netball teams to help fight fires and carry out fire prevention activities.

Since then, TREEZ has grown its support to include church choirs, a youth group and their very own hip hop band The Bright Dreamers. Each group has an allocated area of responsibility and receive money for every tree still growing within their area, no matter the size.

In a country that suffers debilitating deforestation, their work is vital - and very evident for all to see who visit the Zomba Plateau. Every tree that makes it through the year is a cause for celebration.

If you would like to know more about their extraordinary work - including some of the new ideas they are exploring around permaculture and sustainable fuel, then take a look at their latest annual report (2021-2022 at time of writing) for a comprehensive account.
